For one month every summer, the Right Bank of the Seine transforms from a busy expressway into a pedestrian refuge, complete with amenities such as sandy beaches, swimming pools (not in the Seine) lounge chairs, cafes, misting fountains, and shady palm trees.

The program includes activities, such as climbing walls and games and shows and performances which keep the place buzzing into the night.

Although it is financed in part by corporate sponsors, the experience of a truly public space is not overwhelmed by commercialism. It is a benefit to residents of this dense city to provide such a usable space to escape the heat of an urban summer.

Finally, we urge you to explore more cities that are getting their waterfronts right (and wrong) at Project for Public Spaces webpage Great Waterfronts of the World.

Then, make your own suggestions for a vision for San Diego's Waterfront.
